once led him to work with Lord Linley, so it's no
surprise to learn that the couple are very
impressed with the quality of his workmanship.
"Everything has been handmade, so it feels
very special," remarks Joan.
Careful attention to detail is another feature
of the design; from the pull-out ironing board
and specially-constructed shelf for the breadmaking
machine, to the built-in laundry centre
and large wine rack. "One of my pet hates is
ugly electrical sockets, so Simon's company
put them on the inside of the island unit, so I
don't have to look at them," smiles Joan. This
unit provides a focal point to the room, and has
plentiful cupboard space, helping to maintain
the clutter-free, neat feel.
It's clear that Joan and Malcolm are
enjoying their new kitchen. "We love it," he
says, "it's fantastic. Even in my wildest dreams
I didn't imagine it would all work out as well as
this." But the couple won't be tackling any
more major work on the cottage for a little
while, as the next project is their wedding in
the summer. Says Malcolm, "We're planning a
big party in a marquee in the garden for about
150 guests, so more building work is definitely
off the agenda."
