Respecting the architectural heritage

Our client’s brief to us was to create an elegant and timeless traditional kitchen which stood out from the crowd. It was decided early on that a mix of materials would be used to create distinct zones. A new orangery and structural elements were to be created in oak and therefore contrasting timbers were used: a combination of American Black Walnut and Burr Walnut adding a classic sumptuous feel to the cabinetry. We teamed this with a painted finish to stop the kitchen from feeling too dark and heavy.

The zoning of the kitchen was emphasised by featuring painted cabinetry. The dining and display space for example was created wholly in Walnut and the worktop height was lowered to separate it from the working area of the kitchen.

The sophisticated aesthetic was continued with Antique Brown granite work surfaces that are slightly softer than black.

Another key feature in the design was in the hardware. Our client was not a fan of stainless steel so all butt hinges, handles, and knobs were supplied in an American copper finish.

The kitchen was designed as a statement; sitting directly inside the sitting room and dining area with the island becoming a central point for preparation as well as socialising with guests.
