A hand-painted Shaker family kitchen inspired by café culture

Our clients had a very distinct brief for the new kitchen in their family home. They wanted a classic Shaker kitchen with a long tall rectangular island at the centre which would feature bar stool seating beneath. Inspired by the tall tables at their local café, they felt that this configuration would work perfectly for their family of five.

The island had to be multifunctional so we designed it as two clear zones in an L-shape, the tall breakfast bar on one side with an oiled teak surface with shallow drawers beneath to house cutlery and tableware with one place setting for each person. On the other side is a low-level food preparation area in Nero Assoluto Marble with a splashback in High Impala. Within the work surface is a Miele domino induction hob above an integrated combination microwave for when the main AGA opposite is switched off during the summer months. This side of the island also features deep drawers for plans and plates, with adjustable crockery compartments. All end panels feature tongue and groove finishing.

Surrounding the AGA is a long run of framed inset doors, hand-painted in Farrow & Ball New White with chrome butt hinges and hand-turned knobs in American Black walnut. Within the marble worksurface is the wet area with a china undermount sink and a Perrin & Rowe tap. At the far end of the room, away from the main cooking area, is a breakfast cabinet with bi-fold doors.

Above the AGA we designed a traditional overmantel over an inglenook with Fired Earth tiles and a chrome rail to hang cooking utensils and on either side are recessed shelves for cookery books. Facing into the kitchen is a tall larder cabinet alongside an Amana American fridge freezer that has integrated doors and an ice dispenser, which is situated next to a Miele integrated coffee machine above further storage drawers. To the right hand of the island is a tall larder cabinet which is built-in yet designed with a skirting board to seem freestanding. This features pull-out wicker baskets for fruit and vegetables providing a perfect country kitchen look.
