Traditional Tiled Bathroom in a Victorian House.
The brief for this project was to renovate an old existing bathroom to be a brand new family bathroom, yet keeping it in the style of the Victorian property.
The clients were keen for the bathroom to retain its original features including wood panelling and floorboards, together with the original fireplace and we suggested a traditionally modern theme to accommodate that, with dark grey as the central colour. The clients also needed a storage area, so we built cupboards at the far end of the room to complement the original wood panelling. This also meant that we could use traditional sanitaryware by Burlington that had a more freestanding look to it, thus in keeping with the style of the room.
Due to an old leaking shower, the original floor was in a bad state, so we fully renovated it using other boards from under the shower that had not been ruined. In order to free up floor space, we also designed the bath at a 90° angle to the original; something that our clients wanted, but had been told could not be done due to the location of the steel supports beneath the room.
We then designed the wet areas with dark grey Retro Bevelled Dark Grey Gloss 200×100 brick tiles to provide a contrast and to set off the chrome brassware by Burlington, while the furniture was handpainted in Manor House Grey by Farrow & Ball to provide a softer tone. We also replaced the tiles in the fireplace and we painted the surround as well, to bring it completely up to date.
The end result is a clean and modern take on a traditional bathroom and the clients are delighted with the result.
