KITCHEN SOLUTIONS: PENINSULAS
What is a peninsula?
Unlike a kitchen island, which is freestanding in the centre of the room, a peninsula is a run of cabinetry that is attached to a wall. Often used to separate the kitchen from a living or dining space, a peninsula can incorporate cupboard and drawer storage on both sides, or it can be used to house an integrated undercounter appliances such as a dishwasher, or a wine cooler. It is functional, space-saving and space-efficient.
Why have a peninsula?
If your kitchen space is long and narrow, there may not be enough room for a kitchen island which requires at least one metre of walkway surrounding it to account for when cabinetry, oven and dishwasher doors, are opened. It can also provide additional countertop space for food preparation.
A peninsula as a breakfast bar
A peninsula can also be built with an overhang to accommodate bar stool seating so that you have a space for informal socialising, set apart from the cooking, cooling and wet zones in the kitchen. This configuration is known as a G-shaped kitchen.
A peninsula with curves
Ideal for smaller kitchens, a peninsula with a curved end will soften the space and there are fewer sharp angled corners to bump into. The curved end can also be a cabinet for storing plates and crockery, and can include seating on one side, with drawers and cupboards on the other.
A peninsula for serving in an open plan kitchen diner
In addition to providing much-needed storage, a peninsula between a kitchen and dining space can be an ideal halfway point for serving food. It can include an integrated dishwasher beneath so that plates and cutlery can be easily loaded and out of sight when entertaining friends and family.
