Mackintosh

A kitchen in the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh

This is a perfect example of a truly bespoke design made for a client with a very definitive brief. This was to create a kitchen inspired by Scottish architect and artist, Charles Rennie Mackintosh to complement a new timber-framed extension added to her Victorian home. This included a large new gable window and an oak panelled feature ceiling and she wanted the kitchen to feature timber cabinetry to create a perfect flow to the room.

For the furniture to be in keeping with the Mackintosh style, we used American White Oak, American Black Walnut and Burr Oak veneers to create an eye-catching combination, which was complemented by stained glass accents in the Arts and Crafts discipline. The pattern was a repeat of an original feature window in the property.

The shape of the room was unusual and it featured a 45° flanked wall to which the AGA would sit against so we designed a zoned angular kitchen island to face it and to be the centrepiece of the room.

Above the AGA we made a Mackintosh-style overmantel with cut out brackets and leaded light glass, which conceal the extractors. The cabinetry throughout features framed inset doors, chrome butt hinges and hand-turned American Black Walnut knobs. These consist of storage cupboards and deep drawers. The worksurfaces and upstands are all in Antique Brown granite, which is also used as the splashback behind the AGA.

In addition, we included a handmade freestanding dresser to fit exactly into a recess and a separate pantry larder with a marble shelf and spice racks in the doors, which also featured stained glass inserts. All oak drawers are dovetailed and the cutlery drawer was designed to the client’s requirements.

All other cooking and cooling appliances, including the wine cabinet are by Miele. There are two stainless steel sinks with taps by Perrin & Rowe. There are downlights from the overmantel and further LED lighting within the plinth surrounding the island to make a feature of the kitchen at night.
